Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography, or OCT, is a non-contact medical imaging technology similar to ultrasound and MRI. With OCT, reflected light is used to produce detailed cross-sectional and three dimensional images of the eye. You will be seated in front of the machine with your head rested.
The equipment will scan your eye without touching it. The scan takes approximately 5 minutes. The scan allows the doctor to see the detailed images of the retina, allowing the doctor to monitor and detect changes to the retina. An OCT allows the doctor to detect and diagnose eye conditions such as macular degeneration, macular holes and puckers, macular edema, glaucoma, central serous retinopathy and diabetic retinopathy.
